Curiosities

Did you know? Beautiful stories from Romania

A few beautiful and unusual places and facts from Romania.

A funfair 120 metres underground

Turda Salt Mine, a former salt mine in Cluj County, has been turned into an underground attraction with an amphitheatre, a Ferris wheel and an underground lake where visitors can row boats.

The Merry Cemetery

In Săpânța, brightly painted wooden crosses carry short, humorous verses and small pictures about the lives of the people buried beneath them. The tradition started in the 1930s with the woodcarver Stan Ioan Pătraș.

Voroneț blue

The frescoes on the outer walls of Voroneț Monastery in Bucovina are famous for a deep blue that has kept its colour for almost five centuries.

A road praised by Top Gear

In 2009 the presenters of the British TV show Top Gear called the Transfăgărășan the best road in the world. It runs for about 90 kilometres across the Făgăraș Mountains and climbs to around 2,040 metres.

Europe's great wetland

The Danube Delta is the largest and best-preserved delta in Europe. It shelters more than 300 bird species and one of the largest continuous reed beds in the world.

Volcanoes made of mud

Near Berca, in Buzău County, small mud volcanoes push cold mud and gas up from deep underground. The cones rarely exceed six metres, and the landscape around them looks almost lunar.

Ice in a cave all year round

Scărișoara Ice Cave in the Apuseni Mountains holds a block of ice that is at least a thousand years old and stays frozen even in summer.

A very tall wooden church

The church of the Săpânța-Peri Monastery in Maramureș, built between 1998 and 2003, is often described as the tallest wooden church in the world, with a height of about 78 metres.

A castle with its own power plant

Peleș Castle in Sinaia, inaugurated in 1883, is often cited as one of the first castles in Europe to run on electricity, produced by a power plant built next to it.

A blouse on the UNESCO list

The traditional embroidered blouse with altiță, the ia, was inscribed in 2022 on UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, jointly by Romania and the Republic of Moldova.

Houses with eyes

In Sibiu, small attic windows in the old roofs look like half-closed eyes watching passers-by. They have become one of the symbols of the old town.

Little Paris

Bucharest was nicknamed Little Paris in the early twentieth century for its elegant boulevards and Belle Époque buildings, and it even has its own Arc de Triomphe, completed in its current form in 1936.
